Wild Willow’s Waimate Cup

Wild Willow, a six-year-old bred, reared and sold by Breckon Farms, was credited with his third country cup success when he won the Waimate Cup at Timaru on Sunday (October 25).

Starting from a 10 metre handicap, the Art Major gelding worked to the front in the first lap, was briefly headed in the home straight and fought back bravely to score by a length.

The second foal of the Group 1 winner Willow (by Bettor’s Delight), Wild Willow has now won six races and $74,444 in stakes.

The two-year-old trotter Mr Mercedes (What The Hill-Luby Ann) posted his first win at only his fourth start at the premier meeting at Ashburton. After leading early then handing up, the colt unleashed a withering burst to win by open lengths in a 1:59.1 rating over 1700 metres.

A brother in blood to the Group 1 winners Tickle Me Pink and Luby Lou, Mr Mercedes was knocked down for $40,000 at the National Yearling Sale at Karaka in 2025.

Other Breckon Farms’ bred winners last week were the three-year-old trotting filly Our Col (Father Patrick-Cheeky Babe), who earned a new speed badge of 1:56.4 in notching her fifth win from eight starts at Alexandra Park, Harrison John (Always B Miki-Rozelski), a winner in 1:56.5 sitting parked at Gloucester Park, and In A Wink (Bettor’s Delight- Goodlookingbabe), who won in 1:58.8 at Batavia Downs, New York.
