COSMIC MAJOR was the highlight of the weekend taking out the Grp 2 Avon City Ford Welcome Stakes at Addington Raceway on Friday Night for Cullen Racing.

Rozelski, a dour mare who showed great toughness won 6 and amassed over $170, 000 in earnings, was heading towards the "disappointing broodmare" category until Cosmic Major came along. Her first two rather small fillies failed to live up to their breeding only securing 1 win between them.

Given the lack of star power on the page the purchase of Cosmic Major was somewhat of a surprise to Ken and Karen when they found out he was bound for one of the successful Kennard syndicates.
“We were genuinely shocked” recalls Karen following the win on Friday Night, “the first two fillies were such a disappointment”

There was something about him that caught the astute eye of Phil and Glenys Kennard in their pre inspection process. He had that Art Major burliness and a glint in his eye.

They consulted Jim and Anne Gibbs, who had co-raced Rozelski, to see if they would be happy for the colt to be included in that years syndicate. “I’ll give him a chance" said Jim, "he’s got one tick”
Kennards had given him two, so with that, he was secured from the NZB Standardbred Karaka Sale for $37,500.

As is often the case with the nice horses, his journey hasn’t been without its trials and tribulations. During the breaking in process he curbed a hock requiring an extended spell, then when he returned to Steven Boyd's, he still wasn’t happy with him, so sent him back out for another break. Kennard was quick to praise Boyd on Friday for the early work he did with the colt and the patience he showed.

With three starts for two wins and a second the colt now sits second on the IRT Harness Jewels Emerald Leaderboard behind the talented Montana DJ. We look forward to having him as one of the farm representatives on this prestigious day at Cambridge Raceway

He may have been the shining star on Friday night but following their stunning performances on Friday Night REGAL ATTIRE and AMERICAN PRIDE have both booked themselves tickets north to Alexandra Park in the coming weeks.

Regal Attire will now be aimed at the Group 2 Lone Star NZ Sires Stakes 3YO Trotters Championship and the Group1 Breckon Farms Great Northern Trotting Derby.

Joining him chasing Group1 glory will be 2YO filly A BETTOR YOU who will be lining up in the Grp 1 Woodlands Stud Caduceus Club Classic and the Magness Benrow NZ Sires Stakes Fillies Champs the week after.
