Peter Breckon Memorial
Peter and Ken Breckon with Magaera

Alexandra Park will be a place of celebration and reflection tonight as we celebrate the life of the late Peter Breckon.

Tonight marks the 18th running of the Grp 2 Peter Breckon Memorial for the 3YO fillies. A race in honour of Ken’s late brother who passed suddenly in 2003.

The journey into Harness Racing ownership starts in 1996 for the business partners. An article in the NZ Herald by Leo George about the predicted top lot at the National Yearling Sales, a filly by Butler BG, sparked interest with the duo. With a life long interest in the industry and with them ready to find a distraction from the pressure of their highly successful business, Hyrdroflow, they headed to Karaka to purchase the headline grabber.

They secured the filly for a sales topping $30,000 from leading vendor Sandy Yarndley. Named MAGAERA she lived up to the hype going on to give the fledgling harness owners a taste of Group1 success and a 2YO Filly of the Year title to boot! They were hooked.

Roll the clock forward to 2007 and Ken and Karen purchase the farm where Magaera was born from Sandy and Jan Yarndley and established NZ’s premier breeding establishment Breckon Farms.

Tonight, another champion filly born and raised at Breckon Farms, BETTOR TWIST will take her place in the Group 2 event. The dual Group 1 winner will start from the awkward position of 7.
Fellow Breckon Bred runners, Hot and Treacherous, On A Roll and first starter Settle Petal will also line up tonight.
